6th Annual YPD BLUE 5K – Run for a Reason
On Sunday, May 19th, 2013 at 11:00 AM the Yarmouth Police Relief Association and the Yarmouth Police Department will host our sixth annual YPD BLUE 5K – Run for a Reason as a healthy fundraiser to honor and remember those who make a difference in our community during National Police Week, which recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. Law Enforcement officers with special recognition this year to all of the First Responders who took back the streets of Boston after the horrific terrorist attack on the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 15, 2013 as well as the children, staff, and parents, of Sandy Hook Elementary School and the citizens of Newtown, Connecticut after the attack on the community that occurred on 12.14.12.
This year’s race will generate funds and support for the following organizations:
- The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial
- The Yarmouth Police Relief Association
- The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America
The course is a 3.1 mile fast, flat, and scenic waterfront route along beautiful Nantucket Sound and Bass River that will start and end at the Skipper Restaurant located at 152 South Shore Drive in Bass River.
This year’s event will include a special ¼ mile and a special 1 mile Kid’s Race starting at 10:00 AM which will benefit the Faces of Our Future program, founded by a group of parents who are working with the community to support the seven Dennis-Yarmouth schools.
Award winning reporter Kathy Curran of WCVB Channel 5 News in Boston—an avid runner and a summertime Yarmouth resident—will again serve as the special race emcee. Our special guests this year will be Neil Heslin the devoted parent of Jesse McCold Lewis who was murdered at Sandy Hook and Carlos Arredondo the heroic Gold Star parent who helped rescue the wounded and saved lives during the attack in Boston.
There will be prizes and awards for the tops finishers in each category including a special division for the fastest male and female police officer, firefighter, and member of our military. Hot dogs and chowder will be provided by The Skipper Restaurant, and there will be plenty of live musical entertainment.
The professionally timed race and non-competitive walk are open to people of all ages and fitness levels and everyone is encouraged to participate.
