On Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 10:00 AM the Yarmouth Police Department hosted a special ‘Tie One On for Safety’ event at Yarmouth Police Headquarters.
MADD Massachusetts as well as other members of Cape Cod public safety and town officials were present in support of the annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving Campaign which encourages people to tie a red ribbon on the exterior of their vehicle to increase awareness and reduce impaired driving.
Drunk Driving in America Today
- Almost every 90 seconds, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.
- On average, one in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.
- Drunk driving costs the United States $132 billion a year.
- 50 to 75 percent of convicted drunk drivers continue to drive on a suspended license.
- An average drunk driver has driven drunk 80 times before first arrest.
- Adults drank too much and drive about 112 million times per year – almost 300,000 incidents of drinking and driving a day.
- Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes.
- In 2012, 10,322 people died in drunk driving crashes – one every 51 minutes
